It is not only a salt major, it also serves as a major transport route across the bolivian altiplano.
The volume of salt in this place is estimated to 10 billion tonnes. the amount extracted from this for usage (Export and for local usage) is close to 20000 tonnes. It has large amount of sodium, potassium, lithium, magnesium, Borax.
You can find some salt constructions there. There are hotels which are completely made out of salt.
Colchani, Bloques de Sal - A village near this place have salt processing happens. There is a salt museum, where animal carvings are made out of salt.
