Ashok Vatika also called as "Ashoka Vanam" during the Ramayana Mythological period.

Ramayana an Hindu Epic story which also have evidences in the current world and now believed that those characters were lived based on the evidences present in India and Srilanka.

Few Evidences like

1. Cobra Hood cave in Srilanka
2. Foot prints of Lord Hanuman
3. Hot Wells - Ramayana describes about some hot wells in Srilanka. It is still there.
4. Ram Sethu Bridge.
5. Ashok Vanam (Ashok Vatika) where Ravana abducted Sita and taken her to this place.

For readers who doesn't know about Ramayana, I am just giving here a small brief.

Lord Rama - 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu as per epic stories, was one of the son of King Dasaratha and his first wife Kausalya. Dasaratha has 3 wifes (Kausalya, Kaikeyi, Sumithrai). Rama has siblings like Lakshman, Barathan, Chatrugnan. Rama married Sita by breaking the toughest Bow to lift in a Swayambara (Marriage Ceremony during king rule). Rama, Lakshman and Sita were sent to forest for 14 years by his step mother Kaikeyi as she wants her son to take the kingdom. During that time Rama faced so many challenges. Ravana the king of Lanka (Present Srilanka) abducted Sita and kept her in Ashok Vatika. Then Rama rescued her by using his monkey troops headed by Hanuman and killed Ravana.

Sita stayed at Ashok Vatika till the end of war between Rama and Ravana. Ashok Vatika was destroyed by Hanuman.

The Present location is now believed as  Hakgala Botanical Garden. The area is now called as Seetha Elliya. It is at the base of Hakgala Rock forms. Seetha Amma temple is situated there. The garden is 5000 ft above sea level. Other connected site is a spot where Sita bathed in a stream at Sita Eliya, called Sita Jharna.
