Jana Gana Mana - Indian National Anthem - Rabindranath Tagore - Margaret Cousins-Bose

Wishing my fellow Indians a very happy 75th Independence day. India got independence from British East Indian company after the struggle of around 90 years (1857 to 1947). The british colonialism started in India during the early 17th and 18th centuries. Maveeran Alagumuthu kone from thoothukudi district was an early person who rebel against the British presence in India during 1710 to 1757.But he was defeated in the battle against British and Marudhanayagam's forces. Marudhanayagam also later rebel against British during late 1750s and 1760s.  Titumir was a Bengali leader who built a large Bamboo Fort to restrict British but British forces stormed the fort. Other freedom fighters like Tipu Sultan, Hyder Ali fight with British. Pazhasi Raja from Malabar also fight against British along with tribal people. Finally in August 15 1947 India got Independence.

Now lets see the story of Indian National Anthem:

Indian National Anthem was written by Rabindranath Tagore. It was written as a poem. It was first recited in Calcutta on 27 December 1911. In 1912, it was performed by Sarala Devi (Tagore's Niece) along with the group of school students. The poem was published in January 1912 with title Barat Baghya Bidhata. Besant Theosophical College Madanapalle, Andra Pradesh take the pride that the poem was first sung outside on 28 February 1919 when Tagore visited the college and sung the song. It enthralled the students and also the vice principal of that college, Margaret Cousins. Margaret Cousins requested Tagore for an English translation of that poem and then composed tune for the National Anthem. The song was selected as a National Anthem by Netaji Subash Chandra bose when he was in Germany. It officially became National Anthem of India in 1950.
