Pongal a 4 day festival in south india which is to dedicate to the ultimate source of heat and light SUN. Sun is the source for all. Sun is the source for yields. We could say it is nothing but Thanks Giving festival of Indians to the ultimate source SUN. This Harvest festival is also to say Thanks to cattle which is used to plough the fields during irrigation. Cattle will be decorated, Feeded and worshipped. Bull taming festival (Jallikattu) also celebrated during this pongal festival. Famous areas for this Jallikattu in tamil nadu are Avaniyapuram, Alanganallur, Pallavarayanpatti, Thiruvapur, Madurai. Bulls will be cleaned with colorful painted horns and flower garlands entered into the ground where we have group of bull tamers awaiting to chase the bull. A guy who can chase a bull successfully will be awarded with a prize. Similarly, if a bull cannot be chased by anyone, the bull owner will get some prize money. Few community people celebrate 3rd day of pongal as "Kanu Pongal" where ladies devote variety rices to crows for their brother's wellness.

There are some reason behind why these items are in place. Sugarcane culitivation will normally be more during this period. We can make pongal in a mud pot. Turmeric/Ginger also harvested more during this period. This period is considered as significant for Harvesting paddy/Rice.
